It’s Pumpkin Spice Season!

Dear Maggie,

What is your most productive time of year to write?

Sincerely,

Sluggish in Salt Lake

Dear Sluggish,

As much as I love the sunshine and longer days of summer, I have to be honest, my productivity goes way down. As soon as I feel that crisp fall air take hold, though, I’m ready to dig back into my writing. Now that September is here, and the official start of fall is right around the corner, I say, bring on the apple pies and pumpkin spice!

During the month of September, I always feel a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm for my writing. Even before I started grad school, I’ve been driven more by the school calendar than by the yearly calendar. This is probably the result all my time working in education, as well as following my four kids’ school schedules literally for decades. Whatever the case, at this time of year, I like to take stock, organize my project schedules, and set writing targets. Now, that I’m back in school, I’ve added all the coursework to my list as well. That’s okay, though, because the ‘fall effect’ as I call it, is already kicking in!

Bottom line, in the fall, I’m excited to wake up in the morning. I’m focused. I’m productive. I’m in my groove. In fact, September and October are probably my most creative and generative months, so I’ve learned to plan my schedule accordingly. Hopefully, I’ll have a lot of good content to show for it. Happy start-of-pumpkin-spice season, everyone!
